Ken Whiteley and the Beulah Band
Ken Whiteley is one of Canada’s most respected ‘roots’ musicians. He has won a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Genie Award for Best Original Song in a Canadian film, Lifetime Achievement Awards from Folk Music Ontario and from the Mariposa Folk Festival and has been nominated for 7 JUNO Awards and 15 Maple Blues Awards. Drawing on his incredibly rich background in blues, gospel and folk styles Ken’s played at virtually every major folk festival in Canada and performed and recorded with such legends as Pete Seeger, John Hammond Jr., Tom Paxton, Blind John Davis, Stan Rogers, Penny Lang, Guy Davis, Raffi and countless others. A prolific songwriter, a gifted and versatile instrumentalist and a powerful singer, Ken’s music communicates themes of freedom, love, spiritual aspiration and social comment. He says, “I sing, write songs and share my knowledge of traditions because the whole point is to bring people together, make them feel better and more in touch than before we all started singing.” The self titled cd, Ken Whiteley & The Beulah Band was the #2 folk recording of 2015 on Stingray Music streaming. Anchored by the strong fiddling and vocals of Rosalyn Dennett, the stunning banjo playing of Rob McLaren and the extremely groovy string bass playing of Gordon Mowat, Ken and the Beulahs play new music with old soul. Rosalyn played in the popular Winnipeg folk group, “Oh, My Darling” and she has since recorded with many folk artists. Ken first met Gord when he was playing with the contemporary roots ensemble, “Dust Poets”. Rosalyn and Gord also happen to be first cousins. When Rob McLaren left his hometown of Red Deer to attend the jazz program at Toronto’s Humber College, his parent’s didn’t think he would become a banjo player. A great singer and multiinstrumentalist, Rob is kept busy touring with not only Ken but also “Barrel Boys” and “Union Duke”. The band was formed in 2014 and has played festivals and concerts across Canada and in the United States.
