Against the Grain Spring 2024: A Youth Art Class

Against the Grain Spring 2024: A Youth Art Class
THURSDAYS | May 2, 9, 16, 23, 2024 | 6:45 - 8:15PM | Ages 13 - 17 | Discovery Centre

This program provides an opportunity for youth ages 13-17 to learn fundamental visual art techniques using a variety of unconventional materials and processes. Out-of-the-box thinking is encouraged as the instructor guides teens through two intricate projects over the span of the 4-week course. Focus will be placed on developing and refining technical skills, engaging in meaningful conversations, and gaining self-confidence along the way. A new subject is explored each season, with past classes diving into inks, still-life, colour and more!

This edition is inspired by ethereal and three-dimensional art. Students will explore and experiment with water colours, inks, charcoal and soft pastels to create mixed media masterpieces. Art Instructor Candice Arnold will provide demonstrations and guide students through several techniques for each art material, while students develop their own artistic style and imaginative compositions.

Day 1: Drawing an ‘Ethereal Keyhole World’
Students will begin brainstorming for their ethereal world to draw inside a keyhole. The keyhole shape will be drawn large to enhance their magical world and intrigue the viewer to look closely. Students will be encouraged to use their imaginations and take the viewer on a magical journey!

Day 2: Pen& Ink Shading, Depth and Ethereal Colours
Students will begin adding black pen to their detailed keyhole drawings. Shading will be encouraged, along with creating visual depth and light. Demonstrations using pen and ink shading techniques, crowquill ink dipping and watercolour painting will be performed. The use of soft and vivid colours can evoke a sense of serenity and tranquility, which is key in capturing ethereal imagery.

Day 3: Creating Light and Shadow, Plus Metallic Brass Keyholes
Add finishing touches to keyhole imagery, by creating shimmering light and deep shadows. White charcoal pencils can be used for light effects, while grey & black charcoal create shadows. We will use metallic inks to outline the keyhole and brass keyhole cover. Along with dark coloured pastels, if they want a tarnished brass texture.

 Day 4:Three-Dimensional Pastel Goldfish Art
For this final art project, students will take what they learned from the keyhole project, to create three-dimensional Goldfish Art. Their finished artwork will appear as though you can grab the pet shop bag right off the paper! Using white charcoal pencils on black paper creates contrast, along with adding highlights to the goldfish, water and plastic bag creases. Bright goldfish colours will be blended with soft pastels and silver ink used for fish scales. Pastel blues, greys & black charcoal can be used for shadows. Students will have fun creating art that jumps off their page!

‍Max: 12 spots per group
