Ages 13-17

Max: 12 spots per group

March 2, 9, 16, 23, 2023 (Thursday evenings from 6:45pm-8:15pm)

Artist and Instructor Candice Arnold will guide students through the current Heritage Gallery exhibition titled ‘The Hand & The Letter’. The exhibition's hands-on elements encourage engagement with the materials, ideas and styles of our written past. Students will observe a variety of artistic writing methods used throughout history, and will have the chance to interact with real illuminated manuscripts from 13th century & beyond. Art demonstrations will be given on how to use India inks with crowquill pens, gold ink and papyrus paper, building upon Medieval Illumination techniques each class.

March 2: Gallery tour of ‘The Hand & The Letter’ | Drawing illuminated letters
“In ‘The Hand & The Letter’ exhibition, students will have the opportunity to observe medieval forms of illustration, manuscripts & handwriting.” Throughout this exhibition, they can enjoy interactive learning. Students will begin drawing their own illuminated manuscript page by embellishing one alphabet letter surrounded by botanical designs, animals, people, places or buildings, etc. Imagination and creativity will be encouraged.

March 9: Black India ink, crowquill pens and written text
Students will learn how to use crowquill pens with black India ink to create bold contour lines, accent their illustrations and illuminated letter. They will be encouraged to add written text from a favourite poem, story or quote that compliments their letter and imagery.

March 16: Coloured ink painting, gold illumination & borders
The focus for this week will be on adding colour to students' illuminated letters, illustrations and designs surrounding. This will be followed up by creating a whimsical, elaborate border with intricate designs and imagery in the margins. Gold ink will be used in the final stage to create a stunning border, illuminate their letters and any surrounding imagery. Medieval illuminators used gold to add richness & depth.

March 23: Papyrus bookmarks
Using the skills and techniques learned with inks and crowquill pens, students can create their own personalized Egyptian bookmark on papyrus paper. There will be the option to include Egyptian images and cuneiform/hieroglyphic writing from the exhibition, or they may wish to design their favourite animal, flower, person or place.
