Against the Grain: A Youth Art Class Experimenting with Inks
Against the Grain: A Youth Art Class Experimenting with Inks

Ages 13-17

October 6, 13, 20, 27, 2022 (Thursday evenings from 6:45pm-8:15pm)

Youth class introducing block-printing and ink techniques.

Artist and Instructor Candice Arnold will guide you through printmaking and drawing processes using pen & ink, block printing and alcohol ink techniques.

Students will hone their artistic skills using "Against the Grain" materials, ideas and subjects in this out of the box art program. Students aged 13-17 will enjoy 4 weeks of exploring drawing and printmaking utilizing the block-printing method. They will have the opportunity to view Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak’s drawings and prints in the Gallery, which will inform their own choices as they create their own Inuit-inspired artwork. Students will learn the basics of block-printing, and will develop their skills in forming interesting compositions, utilizing line and shape, as well as creating texture throughout the weeks’ progressions. The classes will culminate with colourful final products, demonstrating the use and knowledge of new materials.

October 6: Kenojuak Ashevak Inspired Drawings
Students will learn about Canadian Inuit Artist Kenojuak Ashevak. An exhibition tour will be given to observe and discuss her prints and drawings. They can create their own Inuit-inspired animals to carve into a rubber block. Developing stories through their composition will be encouraged along with using pen & ink for additional drawings.

October 13: Block carving techniques; high and low relief
We will begin with a block-carving demonstration of techniques and safety. Students will learn how to use the tools to carve out their Inuit-inspired animal drawings, determining which areas should have high and low relief.

October 20: Block-printing techniques; adding colour with inks
Students will learn how to print their carved designs onto a large sheet of paper. They can choose any colour of ink or multiple colours. A demonstration on printmaking techniques will be given by the Art Instructor. Once the prints are dry, embellishing will be encouraged using pen and ink details for feathers, fur, nature, other creatures or abstract designs.

October 27: Alcohol Ink Abstract Art
Students will learn how to experiment with Alcohol Inks to create Abstract designs.
Wispy, translucent effects, line texture, depth and ‘stippling’ will be encouraged.
A demo will be given on basic alcohol ink techniques, layering colours, blending with alcohol, creating texture and ‘stippled’ effects with a brush.
